Empowering Differently-Abled Entrepreneurs: The Success Story of Nandishwara PWD Self-Help Group

In today’s society, there are numerous disparities and disadvantages in various fields. Among these, disability is a significant issue. As a result, differently-abled individuals have been left behind in society, unable to progress. Even though they possess all the necessary skills, they have been held back due to a lack of opportunities. For such differently-abled individuals, the DEAL Foundation is actively working. The DEAL Foundation appoints Livelihood officers in each taluk to work for the welfare of differently-abled individuals and women.

The DEAL Foundation identifies differently-abled individuals, provides them with training, and through their inherent skills, helps them pave the way for self-reliance through self-employment. Along with this, the foundation forms self-help groups for both differently-abled individuals and women, where Livelihood officers provide training to the members about the benefits available through the DEAL Foundation and the government. In every taluk, differently-abled individuals and women have received training and are now engaged in self-employment. One such self-help group is the Nandishwara Men’s Self-Help Group for Differently-Abled Individuals in the village of Parasapura, Shirahatti Taluk.

Regarding this group, Rekha Maddi, the Livelihood Officer from Shirahatti Taluk, visited the homes of differently-abled individuals in the village, provided them with information about the DEAL Foundation, and inspired the differently-abled individuals. Later, she gathered all the differently-abled individuals together and provided them with information about the foundation’s activities and the benefits of forming a self-help group. As a result, everyone showed interest and decided to form a self-help group.

Later, Rekha formed the group with ten differently-abled individuals, named it “Nandishwara Men’s Self-Help Group for Differently-Abled Individuals”, and opened an account at the KVG Bank in Magadi with all the necessary documentation. Each member decided to contribute two hundred rupees as savings every month.

After the formation of the self-help group, Rekha provided the group with book writing training, 2016 Disability Awareness training, and leadership training. She also provided information regarding the benefits available to differently-abled individuals from the government. As a result, after receiving the training, the members hold meetings every month, and all the members are contributing to the savings account.

Later, Rekha provided the group with information about employment opportunities. Interested members decided to take a loan from the group and engage in self-employment. As a result, after six months of forming the self-help group, they decided to take a bank loan. Rekha inquired at the bank for all the necessary information, and with all the members’ documentation in hand, they applied for the loan.

Later, the bank informed that only a loan of 50,000 would be provided initially. As a result, the members collectively decided that those who needed it the most would first take the loan and start their employment, and the remaining members would take it later. Accordingly, Muttappa Badagannavar took the loan and engaged in dairy farming.

Thus, Muttappa repaid the loan without any remaining dues. Later, the remaining members discussed and decided to apply for a second bank loan. With Rekha’s assistance, they gathered all the necessary documents and submitted an application to the bank. Since the first loan was repaid without any issues, a second loan of 1,50,000/- was sanctioned. Three members from the group took this loan and are now engaged in their respective businesses. Among them, Mailarappa Ganjigaddera took a 50,000 loan for farming and goat rearing, and is actively involved in his business. He is a physically challenged individual. Similarly, Krishnaappa Enigar took a 50,000 loan, opened a grocery shop, and started his business, becoming a support for his family. Likewise, Muttappa Badagannavar also took a 50,000 loan and continued his dairy farming business.

Thus, even though they were all physically challenged, they stood as an example to all disabled individuals, showing that they have the strength to work, and they became the backbone for their families. They have repaid their loans properly without leaving any dues. The members, who received this support, shared their opinion about the Deal Foundation. Initially, we were frustrated with the idea of a group; we thought that the money would be taken away without any benefit. Also, since we were disabled, we thought no one would give us loans or jobs. However, Rekha visited each home, motivated the disabled individuals, and encouraged them to form a group and start employment. Through this, we first recognized ourselves and found our worth in our families. Forming the group gave us access to loans and benefits, and the training increased our intellectual capacity. We express our gratitude to the Deal Foundation and Rekha on behalf of all the members of our group. Thus, we have expressed our opinion that identifying and helping disabled individuals in their lives will guide them and inspire them to move forward.

Thus, the Deal Foundation is enabling disabled individuals to engage in employment by providing training. Wishing that the Deal Foundation continues to benefit disabled individuals at an even greater level, all disabled individuals are hoping that the organization gains even more recognition and success.
