My Story: Naganna Gouda

We had a chat with Naganna Gauda from Kadampur village in Gadag district about his life experiences and association with DEAL Foundation.

Hello Naganna Gauda, would you mind if I have a chat with you to understand more about your disability and the impact it has on your life?

Sure you can, I would be more than happy to share with you a little bit more about myself.

At the outset can you brief me about your disability?

Sure, let me first begin by introducing myself. I am Naganna Gauda residing at Kadampur in the district of Gadag.

Now, about my disability, I am suffering from physical disability. Both my left limb and my left hand are deformed hence have problems walking however; I have still moved on as I think there’s no other way to go about life but move on.

So how has this situation of yours impacted you?

I have always believed in moving forward without giving up. Hence life has proved to be quite easy for me.

However my disability has had a lot of impact on me hence I had to go through a lot of challenges growing up such as. Inability to be in par with rest of the children in school with regards to sports and games, difficulty in boarding and exiting from the bus, walking from and to the bus stand etc. I have completed my SSLC and had to drop out after that due to the problems I had to face majorly due to my disability.

What are you engaged in currently?

Well, to be honest, I do different activities such as selling newspaper to 22 houses in my surroundings, I also work at the post office and then go on to do some work at the two acres of land we own. By doing these, I am now able to support myself and my family despite my disability.

So finally what’s your opinion about the work we do at DEAL Foundation?

I would like to take this opportunity to first of all thank the foundation and its members for the wonderful work they have been doing across different taluks at Gadag district. I am certain that the work of the foundation has benefited many persons with disabilities.

Personally I have got a lot from the foundation.

First of all, I happened to become a member of a Joint Liability Group (Navachetana JLG). As a member of the group, I’ve gained a lot in terms of my personal growth and financially as well.

Apart from this, the Programme Manager and other members of DEAL Foundation  offer me endless support by their words of encouragement and the work they do which honestly makes me feel inspired to do something both for me and the disabled community at large.

I would like to join DEAL Foundation in their efforts to build individual and community resilience and create sustainable livelihoods for persons with disabilities. I see my association with DEAL as a volunteer continuing to make a difference to the people living around me.

Thank you for having given me the opportunity to express myself and express my gratitude to the Foundation.

I would also like to thank you for your time and wish you all the best for your future.
